No referral is required to see a psychologist but is required in order to receive a medicare rebate. Speak to your GP to find out if you are able to get a referral, know as a Mental Health Plan. The rebate from medicare for a session with a clinical psychologist is $128.40. If you are seeing a generalist psychologist, the rebate will be less.
You can receive a rebate from medicare for up to 10 sessions in a calendar year. Due to COVID, the government has extended this to a further 10 sessions in a calendar year although we expect this to be temporary. If you do not have a referral from your GP, you may instead, receive a rebate from your private health insurance if you have the appropriate extras cover. You may wish to check with your private health fund to see if you are covered for psychology.
