Most of us will have felt down at one time or another and most of the time, we have a good reason for feeling that way. However, when those feelings become more severe, and they last for 2 weeks or more and they begin to stop us from functioning in our everyday lives, then we might consider that this is depression.

Signs of depression can include:

  • Feeling bad about yourself
  • Changes to your sleeping and/or eating patterns.
  • Feeling more pessimistic, angry, guilty irritable, or anxious
  • Enjoying things less
  • Experiencing up and down moods
  • Feeling more pain
  • Trouble with concentration and memory
  • Feeling de-motivated
  • Low energy

Having one of the above symptoms does not indicate depression but it’s still worth checking it out as perhaps there might be a biological basis to one of these symptoms….e.g low energy might indicate low iron levels.

Trying to ascertain the cause of depression is not always clear cut. For some people there might be a clear reason that has triggered their depression, like the death of a loved one, or the breakdown of a relationship. For others, the reason is less clear. For many it’s a build up of things and the reality is that for most people who experience depression, the causes stem from a multitude of things such as stressors, vulnerability to depression and perhaps their overall access to resources such as social support.

At East Melbourne Psychology, your therapist will talk through your symptoms and your likely causes to best ascertain how to treat your depression.
